Please Ignore Vera Dietz

King, A. (2010). Please ignore Vera Dietz. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Vera is an 18 year old girl dealing with the death of her best friend. The book floats between the present and the past as we learn of Vera's friends and family and the events that are shaping her life. Vera struggles with making great choices in life versus succumbing to peer pressure. In the end, Vera makes the right choice and is happier because of it. This novel is great for the 16-18 year old. I enjoyed the way the author gave different perspectives during the story. I was able to see more of what was going on beyond what Vera knew or was thinking. This novel is an excellent example of Contemporary Realistic Fiction. The author does an excellent job and letting us see into Vera's life. We see how she deals with bullies and peer pressure. The reader sees the results of drinking and doing drugs because it changed who Charlie was. We also hear the parent perspective and see how the decisions as a teenager do impact the parents.
